STANDARD WORKSHOPS – OUTREACH VISITS – LOANS BOXES
At King Edward Mine we have good indoor facilities for school groups in the historically important former Survey Office with its huge draftsmen's tables and stools. There is a well-laid out, yet compact, museum ideal for groups of pupils to do independent work and an expert-led trail through the mill where pupils can observe the turning, winding, shaking and splashing machinery. On wet days it is quite possible to fill every minute with purposeful activity indoors while on clear days the choice is even greater with stunning views along the Great Flat Lode trail with its myriad engine house chimneys.
Lesley Allen, King Edward Mine’s Education Officer, has experience in classroom teaching, museum education and geology so is ideally suited to designing and delivering exciting school’s workshops. There are standard workshop options available for all age groups, but if you have a particular interest or project in mind she will work with you to develop something to suit your needs.
Standard workshops at the mine: charge per pupil: £3.50, accompanying adults free
KS1 & KS2 ‘MINING – THEN AND NOW’
Pupils have demonstrations, a museum trail, a mill tour, handling opportunities and extension activities to choose from. Each pupil is given a FREE family ticket so they can bring their family back and enjoy the site all over again.
KS3 ‘MINING CULTURE – MY CORNWALL’
This cross-curricula session is ideal for activities week or cultural Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) opportunities. Students have a general visit to the site with a question sheet that encourages them to think about a range of issues around science, technology, Cornish history, the Cornish diaspora and economics.
KS4 APPLIED SCIENCE – RISK ASSESSMENT
Students working towards a GCSE Applied Science qualification carry out a REAL Risk Assessment (required coursework project) on a potentially risky site, which can be completed within the visit and then slotted straight into their course-work folder without any nagging from their teacher! All the necessary instructions, advice and RA sheets are provided.
